Driving and texting

A number of factors go into the calculation of insurance rates. The nature of insurance, however, is pooled risk. And every motorcyclist kept on life support because he/she was stupid enough to ride without a helmet costs me money.

True. I lived in California where it is mandatory to wear a helmet but I started wearing one long before it was law.

Having one of your friends killed causes you to rethink this "freedom" thing when riding a bike.

And the cost to taxpayers is astounding. Considering that most of the Country is in financial disarray right now you would think it would be mandatory.

I drifted off topic, I apologize. Back to texting and driving.

The problem isn't texting, the problem is doing anything that takes your mental focus off driving...that could be texting, talking to a passenger, talking on the phone, reaching for the radio at the wrong time...etc. I get passing a law for texting, but where does it end? You can't govern a person's thoughts... Though sometimes I think our government would try.

Cell phone or not, too many people are terrible drivers and don't take it seriously enough. I think all drivers should be retested (road and written) every couple years.

More bad drivers off the roads (+ less drivers overall = less traffic)
More jobs created by the DMV to keep the wait reasonable
Incentive for better public transportation

+1000, there are WAY to many people that shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel at all, especially here in TN...

sadly i agree with you i drive thru your state all the time the back stretch around mont eagle is nuts when you got a few thousand pounds behind and a bunch of speeding tards around you.memphis and nashville are the worst tho you cant look in 10 cars w/o seeing atleast 9 off them messing with their phone

I was watching effin' science on G4 the other day and they did an experiment about this subject. Apparently driving drunk reduces your reaction time by 104% I think it was. Driving while texting reduces your reaction time by 235%. Huge difference, that's why texting and driving is majorly stupid. So is driving drunk.

I wonder if they ever tested anybody who was drunk and texting?

Sorry, just trying a little levity.

ROFLMAO!! I'll volunteer to be the test subject!!!

Seriously though...

Left thumbs on the wheel people!

Right Thumbs on the wheel too!!

Which can control every button on the dash

Which controls the touch screen!

What? There's traffic outside? How dare they put traffic outside while I'm trying to control all these buttons inside!!

Lets apply the same "Thumbs on wheel" theory to my bike shall we?

I honestly don't care what you do inside your car. Your first priority is OUTSIDE the car. If you can't handle that, you shouldn't be driving.

...and to the truck driver who thinks everyone should be tested like a truck driver before getting their license. I'm going to have to gently disagree.

Everyone should be tested and retested like Pilots are. Then I'd be happy!

Oh, and to the OP, Ricks I think it was... You didn't post the coolest video!

The making of:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgHwY5Prtd8"]YouTube - 'The Making Of' British Text and Drive Car Crash PSA - Special Effects Breakdown

Way cooler than the finished product! That's the geek in me talking. Or is it the alcohol... One of the two!

There should be a law preventing women from wearing tight clothing or short dresses as this is distracting too. A law to prevent cameras on top of traffic signals because now we got to look out for those too, even when we check our speed limit. Mater of fact, that speedometer thing is a distractions as well. I'd like to see a law that prevents giant signs dedicated to LeBron James.

So here's what I surmise some of you guys think:

1. Do not talk to passengers.

2. Do not touch the radio/stereo/bluetooth.

3. Don't look at the GPS

4. Eyes on the front and only briefly on mirrors.

5. No phone calls, hands free or otherwise.

You know a whole generation of us grew up without even seatbelt laws. Heck I use to stand on the front seat of the car, rode in the back of pick up trucks. Child seat? Never even heard of.

We survived. Does it occur to anyone that many of these laws are really made up not in the best interest of public safety but in the interest of the almighty dollar.

When I ride a motorcycle I wear a helmet but I do so by choice, not because my state forces me to.

There are too many driving laws on the books these days. Laws that say it's OK to have a drink but don't go over .08. Well, one drink does that. Why not just make it plain illegal to drive while drinking?

I think this is probably going to get political here so I'll stop now. I know my state will never take away my right to use a phone with a hands free device and that's the way it should be.

Thank you Ive been waiting for someone to say this.. Texting and driving is very dangerous but so is alot of things that arnt yet illegal.. Money is the motivation.

Less government > more government
#1 - my son in law, the cop....I'm all for not using the computer while driving in the cop car unless there is a partner in the passenger seat who can do that.

#2 - In PA we can go w/o a helmet too, but I choose to wear one. I was in a motorcycle accident in 1982 and it wasn't until I was in the emergency room that I even knew I hit my head....hard based on the huge scratch.

#3 - Please keep politics out of this thread and forum.

There's nothing funny about anything eliassami5 - bravo for Michigan passing the law like California already has. Unfortunately PA does not yet have a texting law on the books. This is a very disturbing, but very worthwhile video to watch because after watching it, you'll have a constant reminder if you ever do decide to text and drive.
Last year a 19 year old girl was texting and driving, went through a 4 way stop and broadsided a fellow motorcycle rider and his wife who was riding on the back. It killed his wife and the 19 year old girl's life is ruined - manslaughter charges. This was such a senseless thing, wife dead and 19 yr. old in jail. I am also an avid motorcycle rider and constantly dodging weaving cars. I have much less of a chance to live on my bike than I do in my Jeep.

Although the video is very graphic, I appreciate the fact that you posted it ricks.
Where i am at in PA it is illegal to use your cellphone on a highway or within city limits. oh and just because research says its safer to talk to the person next to you doesn't mean it is, all you have to do is make it trick enough people or put it in there head then it will never die.
I mean come on you can do anything with numbers example i can make 1=2 see

  • Step 1: -1/1 = 1/-1
  • Step 2: Taking the square root of both sides:
    image24.gif
  • Step 3: Simplifying:
    image25.gif
  • Step 4: In other words, i/1 = 1/i.
  • Step 5: Therefore, i / 2 = 1 / (2i),
  • Step 6: i/2 + 3/(2i) = 1/(2i) + 3/(2i),
  • Step 7: i (i/2 + 3/(2i) ) = i ( 1/(2i) + 3/(2i) ),
  • Step 8:
    image26.gif
    ,
  • Step 9: (-1)/2 + 3/2 = 1/2 + 3/2,
  • Step 10: and this shows that 1=2.
Welcome to the forums! Looks like high school algebra! You have input errors friend:)

Are you saying he didn't do that in Peterson's MathXL? He copied pasted? OP, where did you get this math? It is simple, and complex numbers like (i) can be equated with a great deal of ease. I mean what is the deal? There aren't even any complex ratio equations? No quadratics to be set? No Factoring Polynomials? No synthetic division? Parabolas? (which are all pre college concepts, lol! That is real basic math, and copy paste never fails IMO (I find it hard to believe he copied pasted, I mean, why not just copy past some calc and make it look good?...Just curious friend:) Come on back and fix it, we want you to graduate!
Vulcan Rider nailed it [-1(-1)=1] [l-1l=1] [-(1)(1)=-1] [-1=-1] [1≠2]

i dont need math to know website and design. look at it every single "STEP" hyperlinks to a webpage. not even this one

in case you are to headsprung as in the way you are calling me out in this quote here is where the link goes
Classic Fallacies -- This is the Fallacy

therefore he copied and pasted but hey i must not have "GRADUATED" commen sense yet

"next time you should pay attention instead of trying to be belligerent"

in case that wasnt enough proof the exact equation is posted up on that site
Classic Fallacies -- 1=2: A Proof using Complex Numbers

but hey maybe he didnt cut copy and paste lmmfao

here is some real simple math for you that page + highlight + copy + paste = copy/paste

Laughing deeply! He got it wrong with copy paste by believing others math! Hey, you pointed it out:icon_ banana:PS, I am just Han....solo that is, your OP guy is the one you seek.....good luck and may the force be with you! PS, it is to bad all of that is linked, just goes to show you input errors happen, even on the web:) As I have stated. I did over look the links, but I am way further educated then the context of that original post so I felt no need to investigate further, or hit links to verify....:pint::popcorn:My tuition is paid up, hehe I do my own math woot!
