Double notifications with sms

I have Handcent which I like. But no matter what I do the droid text app pops up first when I get a text. Then I have to close it and open Handcent. How do you stop it once and for all. I've clicked every option that I can think of but it just doesn't work.

go into the native messaging app and in the settings turn off notifications
