Hi everyone! My name's Diane! But all my friends call me DiDi (pronounced DeeDee)
I'm brand new to the droid world cuz i just got one from my uncle who didn't like it (too complicated for him he said) and so he's got a different one now. Its a verizon phone and i don't know but he told me it's a X2 model. I don't use Verizon right now but i'm going to be finished with my T-mobile in a few months i think. So I've decided i'll just have to wait for awhile so even though i can't use the Droid right away I want to learn everything I can about it. I don't exactly understand what it means to 'activate' it but and i think you have to do that before it will do anything. Is that right? I'm also intersted in what people are talking about called 'Rooting'? -- I think I figured out that's like getting Admin control over the phone -like you do with Windows i think. I'm not really clear about that yet cuz this is like only my second day trying to read things about the Droids.
I've had a motorola 360 for a few years on TMobile and now the Droid is going to be my first smartphone. I'm pretty computer savvy in general and have several hacker type friends who have taught me a lot already. I spend a lot of time online with my laptop & desktop at home. But i want to be able to use the droid for also on the web & stuff in addition to using it as a phone. I don't really need a lot of phone minutes tho. So basically what i'm going to have to learn is how to use the Droid for internet access and things like that.
I LOVE that I found a forum here that is dedicated to us Droiders ;-) I already have looked around and read several things which i didn't know about the Android system by Google. Also I was disappointed to find out that Verizon won't let users of their Droid phones use Skype which I thought i could use before i can switch from TMobile to something else. Somewhere someone mentioned possible altrnative called something like Fringe or Numbuzz (or something like that). Is there maybe any other way you can make voice calls without yet being on a cellphone plan? --
It looks like theres a lot of friendly people here and i'm hoping someone can help me to learn lots of stuff about how the droids work and how to really get the most out my phone. Thanks to everybody who might point me to the best place to begin reading and understanding the Droid.

Welcome to the site. I saw you're from Austin, I have a few friends that go to UT. I live south of Brenham down 290.
The x2 is a good phone and has a good amount of custom ROMs. You are right, rooting is basically like administrator access. You can install custom files, wifi tether, install themes and more.
For voice calling, you can use the phone with a wifi network and use Google Voice in conjunction with another app (I can't remember what the name is).
Anyway, good luck with your new phone and I suggest reading up on everything you can. It definitely helped me out a ton.

Yeah i know several people who went to UT also! -- And I also know where Brenham is too. Been there a couple times! Not very far from College Station and the famous home of BlueBell! (IMO absolutely the best ice cream in the whole entire WORLD! -LoL!)
Actually I'm no longer in Austin technically speaking. I was for several years but then moved a little further outside the city limits into the Lake Travis area. I figured folks just recognize Austin better.
Good to know the droid x2 is an ok phone. I guess I need to read up on how to root it and also about "roms"? - Is that like a sim-card? I know there's a sd memory card (8GB i think) in it already. I was told that I can't use my other sim card from my old phone but i don't know whether i would want to do that anyway. Does the memory card replace the need for a sim card. I'm still a little confused. Where on the forum do you find out about these things? I just need some help getting started in the right place.

Haha yeah, Bluebell is the best.
A custom ROM is replacing the system file on the phone. Right now, the stock Motorola ROM is Gingerbread based. You can replace it with a ROM that has a different look, performance tweaks and different mods. They usually have better battery life than stock also.
Verizon doesn't use sim cards (except for 4g) , so you won't be able to use one. The phone should have come with an 8 gig micro sd card which can be upgraded to a larger one if you need more space.

I had a iPhone 3G starting 2008 (my first smartphone), I recently signed a 2-year contract with Verizon and got my new Droid Razr for $0.01 at Amazon.com (where I shop for practically everything btw). Totally new to the Android world and excited about finding out everything about it! Loving my Droid Razr

On a sidenote, I am a 30+ Finance professional with interests in various subjects ranging from social science and psychology to technology and current world events. Just finished reading the new Steve Jobs bio that came out a few days after his death (loved it, highly recommended, very captivating book!!). Currently reading an Ayn Rand book ("Capitalism: An Unknown Ideal"). Also spend a lot of time watching movies, have a weak spot for horror and foreign movies, oh and love to cook !!
