Does the droid open many background apps?

I got advanced task killer thinking killings apps would save battery life. upon installation i noticed that my droid was running many processes i had not opened. a list of current processes include: browser, alarm clock [NEVER USED IN MY LIFE], corporate calendar[i dont even had an account!!], setting, messaging and the app killer itself which is fine.
why won't they close on their own?

No need to worry about the background apps. App Killers in general are not necessary unless you need to kill a rogue app or something. Read through all the forum stickies for a lot of good Droid info. This one deals with App Killers.
