is there a way, through either an app or setting, to disable background data when the screen is off? so like weather and that stuff will only update when i have the phone unlocked.

tasker!!! an amazing app. not too sure if there is anything for turning off background data ( i haven't looked into that) but I have my profile set to toggle mobile data every 10 minutes and turn off when i turn my screen off.

Juice Defender Pro. Not sure if the free version does that or not but definitely worth a shot.

I just discovered Juice Defender has a widget to do just that. Its quite simple. Disable/enable with one touch.

I set Tasker to turn auto-sync on and off every 30 minutes for a couple of minutes.

The free version of Juice Defender does exactly that, and helps conserve battery life immensely! Two thumbs up :)

My wife and I use Juice Defender, her phone sits all day, the other day while plugging it in i checked her battery stats. Unplugged for 1 day 10 hours 47% left. Thunderbolt non rooted stock battery. Prior to Juice defender she'd get 12 hours max.
I use my phone a lot, I only gain about an hour or 2 per full charge.

I assume the difference is that juice defender is disabling everything while her screen is off.
