So I tried it, and it worked for me. Make sure you are extracting the zip file and not renaming it to an apk.

then use astro or linda to install.
then go to settings, language and keyboard, select HTC_IME mod, then you long press on any area that you can enter text and select input method then select HTC_IME mod.
its easier then it sounds!
