Dark Droid

As of yesterday, my droids screen stays at the dimmest level possible..autobrightness doesn't work and even manually the screens brightness won't change..I have a motorola droid non-rooted and I haven't really installed any new apps..I can see the screen somewhat flickering trying to brighten up..could it be that tthe backlights have gone out? Any thoughts or ideas on what else it could be? I've tried rebooting and taking the battery out as well...still no help..
