D2G wifi hack

I guess I am a lucky one. I run GB 2.3.3 / .606 and have no problems with tethering using stock tethering app. I have run my Toshiba laptop and a desktop with a USR wifi card in it and they both tethered fine with no issues. Just wondering if it's because I'm not on Vzw ?
