contact sync does not seem to work correctly

Hi,
First post.
Managed to get my SIII synced using exchange server, Outlook is the mail client.
Oddly, some contacts did not transfer.
A friend and I were talking about this and she has a similar issue with a Samsung Galaxy phone.
We must be missing something.
Anybody have any tips?
