Contact photos

Is anyone else having this problem. You set up all your contacts with photos and a few days later my phone is deleting random contact photos. It doesnt delete the photo form gallery, just from my contacts. What the Hell is going on???!! its getting frustrating. I have verizon cloud, which I dont really like, and gmail contact sync. I updated my phone to kitkat and with the usual battery drain issue, this photo deleting is pretty annoying. Someone please help!
