clockwork mod questions

I have recently bought an htc thunderbolt that had a bad lcd. After replacing the lcd i realized this phone was rooted. Also if i go into recovery it takes me to clockwork mod recovery. I don't know much about this stuff, so i was wondering. can anyone give me a quick overview of what that allows me to do? It still appears to be running sense, so i guess it doesn't replace the home launcher.

ClockworkMod Recovery is an alternate recovery that was flashed to replace the stock recovery. It gives way more options than the stock recovery. The biggest and most important is the ability to create a nandroid back-up. Which in a nutshell is an exact image of the way your devices is right now. It allows you to go back and flash that nandroid back-up in the event that something goes wrong when you are modding.
