Can't receive texts to multiple recipients

I have an HTC droid Incredible, using verizon (by default rather than choice). I can send texts to multiple recipients, but cannot receive them, and can't find a way to change this in the settings. Is it simply a message size issue (that is, the multiple recipients make even a short text too big for my phone to receive) or is there a way to fix this? Thanks for any help.
