Can't hear incoming callers

I have a new phone and yesterday was unable to hear incoming caller voices. Help! I have combed through the Tips book, checked my settings, etc. but am at the end of my knowledge. I would like to avoid a trip back to the store if you can help. Thanks!

This happened with my husband's DX a few days after he got it. He could hear the ring, pick up the call, but then there was nothing on the line on his end (or mine if I called him.) He had to take it back and swap for a new phone.
