Can the XOOM be used as your phone?

I have a Droid X and very rarely use it as an actual phone. Since I refuse to have two data plans with Verizon would it be possible to use a XOOM as my phone with a bluetooth headset? No, I wouldn't want to walk around holding it up to my ear.

If I remember correctly the Galaxy Tab can be used as a phone in Europe, but the function was disabled in the US. Heck, I even checked out the Galaxy Tab at Verizon and they had to assign a phone number to put it on the network. BTW, I think that disabling this feature was very "Apple like", which is why I got rid of my iPhone to begin with.

From the specs page comparing the different versions, it looked like they don't have a "phone" radio at all (just a "data" radio).

You could probably use it for VoIP.

I was wondering the same thing.

Im curious to see if Google Voice will work on the device.

I maybe wrong but I don't see how Google voice would work on the Xoom since it doesn't have a phone radio. I know the 3g Xooms will have phone a number for connecting to the internet & texting but that's it without a phone radio (except VOIP/video). kinda like the MiFi, it has a phone number but no phone radio. It can dial to get on the internet and send and receive text messages via VZ manager and a computer.

It could work the same way as the VOIP calling in Gmail using Google Voice. It's simply a matter of whether or not they include that functionality or not. I'm hoping yes, but guessing no.

Google voice does not use VOIP. GV is a middle man type service that handles and forwards calls using your cellphone or landline connection.

It does that too, but last August they enabled the feature to make calls from within you browser, without having to use any "real" phone with it.

Google Voice Integrated Into Gmail. Make And Receive Calls From The Browser

I use it a TON and I really hope the Xoom can do it too.
This is one of those times when I like it when I'm wrong!!!

Well, you could use it to make calls, not receive them but that would depend if it has a microphone in it. If it doesn't, then no you can't.

Hopefully it will have a mic to go along with the front facing camera since the demo video showed gtalk video chat.

It does have a mic. I "think" it's a very small hole in the bottom of the device, near the charging / usb / hdmi ports.

So I noticed that google voice is not an option in the market place and when all my apps downloaded automaticly it didnt even list it as not loaded at the bottom of the list.

Not only do I use it as phone calls I also use it for text messaging when I am even on wifi.

I am very upset at the lack of this.

It is a new device though.

The xoom just like the droid X and others can use Skype and/or google voice. The main concern is if you can use it like an actual phone instead of using "Middle Men" for phone calls.
In example i would rather keep my number if i got a Xoom as my phone instead of using googles number or skype's number and something that you cant use with the others is picture text.

The xoom is great im getting it to replace my droid x but im mainly not happy that it doesnt have a USB like the asus tablet but something ill have to custom build for it.

You should look into the app GroveIP/ Ot's on the market for about 3.99. Combined with Google Voice, it lets you send and receive VoIP calls with the Xoom.

You can go to XDA's Xoom forum (Apps and Themes) and do a search for Google Voice.

Yes the Xoom has a mic, as i have been able to use GrooveIP to make calls using the Xoom,s wi-fi and 3G connections.
