Can someone point me to Rooting/ROM 101?

I'm new (just got my Droid two days ago) and would like to understand the basics of what "Rooting a Droid" is and "What a ROM" is and what it does. Are there any sticky threads for this purpose? I can't find one that I can begin with.

Rooting is like giving yourself administrator rights on your droid. You have access to all the files on your phone so they can be modified to your liking. The ROM is the software that makes your phone work. Like what 2.0 or 2.0.1 or 2.1 versions of the OS.

IF your wanting to root. And want to keep it easy and simple, go with DroidMod's DMupdater. It does all the hard stuff for you. Here is the thread walking you thru step by step. Its easy as pie Loading DroidMod Roms with DMupdater, Reflashing to Older Sholes/DroidMod Roms

I was afraid to root and rom my Droid for a long time, mostly because I didn't know exactly what to expect. If you're the kind of person that likes to know what going on when you root and rom use this guide:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ha...ng-only-sprecovery-terminal-emulator-zip.html

It takes you step by step and explains everything. So, when you're done, you actually know what you've done!

The DroidMod program is good too. It does all the dirty work for you. I didn't like that option too much because I'm a beginer and I like to know what I'm doing so if something goes wrong I know how to fix it. After I'm well versed I probably will switch to a more automated option like DroidMod.

I rooted today to DroidMod and I was terrified, but I am in love with it now. I am still a little nervous to try something like Bugless Beast, but DroidMod makes it uber simple.
