Can I make Handcent native?

I just downloaded Handcent SMS. I really think I am gonna like this App. The only thing I have found is that when I get a text, not only to I get an alert from Handcent, but I also get one from the default sms software. hen I am asked which program I would like to use to open the message.

Is there a way to just set Handcent as my message service, and completely bypass my default?

Yes. Go into the native app and disable notifications.

When it pops up and asks which program you want to use, check "always use this program" or whatever it says.

I'm trying to set custom notifications (Droid X) within Handcent, such as the ringer, color of the LED for notification, speed that it flashes etc... None of the settings work including the ring tone. I've removed the setting for Notification from the native messaging app but still no-go....Any ideas?
