Camera and GPS

Hey guys, why does the GPS have to be active for the camera to orient pictures properly. I notice that if i take a picture with the GPS disabled, when i go into the photo album the picture is upside down, and rotating the phone also rotates the picture upside down. Is there anyway to fix this, or do i have to turn GPS ON everytime i want to take a picture?

Ok i discovered something. Holding the phone vertical with GPS OFF, with the camera facing forward whether in portrait or landscape, and i take a picture, when i go into the gallery the photo is oriented correctly (in the way which i held the phone to take the picture), however if i hold the phone so that the camera faces down at my feet, with GPS OFF and take a picture, the gallery shows the image rotated to the left, with GPS ON and i take a picture facing down at my feet, the picture in the gallery is oriented correctly (in the way i held the phone), why is this? Does having the GPS off throw off the sensors in the phone?
