I know one click apps for rooting sometimes cause problems, but soup or root works like a charm for me. Use version 1.8 though, the other one didn't work. If you are going to flash a custom recovery and move on to a custom rom right away, this is the least headache. I've probly used it a dozen times with zero issues. It is basically an automated adb way of rooting.
I just rooted mine yesterday, it was easy & totally worth it. I have not started using a custom ROM yet though, kinda chicken haha. But there are a ton of apps that require root. Overclocking is cool too, speeds up your phone a bit.
I used THESE DIRECTIONS, they were the easiest for me! And when you are flashing the first file using RSDlite DONT BE SLOW IN PRESSING UP ON THE DPAD OR IT WONT WORK you need to "catch the boot" took me a few tries before I realized that I wasn't doing it fast enough.
Good luck!!
I used this one and had no problems. Make your life easier and use a computer with XP on it. I had some issues with my Win 7 64-bit, but then tried with an XP machine and it went perfectly. Good Luck.
