boot loop 3.1.1?

I tried to install 3.1.1 on my D1 today using spr recovery and renaming to update.zip. After restarting the phone it got caught in a boot loop. I restored my backup from last night without issue. Is this not a good method for installing this rom? Any help would be appreciated.

When I installed 3.1.1, I didn't rename the file to update.zip....I left it as is. Once I was in Recovery mode (and had wiped data/cache/etc) I directed Recovery to find the file on my sdcard and installed.

From what I know, update.zip is for updates, not new installs. Maybe that is what messed thing up?
