Best way to close programs for memory?

I have a question about closing apps. When I lauch the tast killer app it lists a lot more apps than in the application section under setting on the phone, why is this? And is the calander and other apps shown with task killer always running? Im kind of confused as to what is and isnt suppose to be running at all times...

Same here. What do I need running and what can be truned off. I know its preference but what are all you guys turning off?

:)
Mock, yea, ing, yea, bird, yea!

I downloaded an app called "Avanced App Killer Free" that seems to work pretty well.

Yep i use the same app.

I cant believe 5 year old windows mobile has this function designed better than Android :(

Android is much younger. Older OSs have had more time to perfect their features and settings. So in that respect, Android is excellent and catching up quickly.

On another note, take caution when using these third party task/app killers. I have seen many users run into weird problems when using these types of apps. It can make the phone unstable and require a restart.

The best way (although it is more work) is to close unwanted programs using the OS's native close feature.

I haven't seen it myself (well in the last 5 days anyway/with the 100 or so apps i have on my Droid).

Exactly how 'do' you close apps natively on the droid?

I don't think you can. It's not documented in the user documentation and when you go into the menu to manage the programs running it only lists basic ones. (i.e., corp. calendar, google, email)

There was an option in settings somewhere to manage running apps. Take a dig in there and you should run by it. It's not exactly easy to get to, but it has worked for me.

It could be annoying when you first get the phone and download/close/uninstall all your apps that you test but don't want, but after that its not a huge issue for me.

I havent killed any apps in a few days and the phone runs exactly the same. YOU DONT NEED TO KILL APPS! Waste of time, the OS kills them on its own when needed.

Guys - you're doing it wrong :D

To make things run fast, you want the memory FULL!!!! Why? Well think of it this way: empty memory is wasted memory. It's as if it doesn't exist!

Now then, an OS can speed things up be 'preloading' the memory with stuff it's "most likely" to need. If it doesn't end up needing it, there's no penalty, but if you do use one of those preloaded things, it's a LOT faster! Also - there isn't any battery cost for this - just because an application has it's code and data preloaded into memory DOESNT mean that application is consuming any CPU cycles.

Thanks for the tip. I have been killing apps left and right and haven't seen any improvement.

I had google maps running with my GPS on - and it definitely was draining my battery (though not speed of phone) - just make sure, for battery sake, you toggle Wi-Fi/GPS/Bluetooth off when not needed, and app-kill GMaps if you do need GPS but not the app itself.
