Best unlockable/rootable phone

Due to a strange set of circumstances I'm looking for a phone that has an unlocked or unlockable bootloader, lots of dev support and is at least 6 months old. Also - it needs to be for Verizon...

SO - what's the best phone out there that meets these requirements?

BUT, the largest developement community is probably the gnex.

Both those phones are too new. Let's limit it to phones that are at least a year old.

Then the phone you're looking at would probably be the original droid.
