Asus Shares Why No Rear Camera on Nexus 7; It's What You Probably Guessed

Asus must like to state the obvious. They shared why the new Nexus 7 does not have a rear-facing camera. Apparently, it would have added to the cost of the device and made it even less profitable. You don't say? Seriously though, the real decision came down to, either they include a camera and then cut costs by sacrificing the build quality of the overall device, or they cut the camera and keep the build quality high. They made the obvious choice, especially since many users will no really lament the absence of a rear camera.

While this makes great sense, many of us are still wondering why they didn't include a camera app with the device, considering that it does have a front-facing camera... Ah well, at least there are some great options in the Play Store.

Is it really a bad thing though? I mean how many people use a camera on a tablet anyways? I don't think I ever used the camera on my TF201.

I watched a tourist in Coronado taking pictures with his tablet. From I believe the tour was from japan so I have no clue what models of tablets they get. But it looked weird seeing them hold it up to take pictures of the view lol

I hardly ever use the rear camera on my Xoom .. mostly because the quality sucks compared to my GNex. I don't blame them cutting that cost to up the build quality, tho it sounds like they should've upped it a little more with the dead-area and washout of the screen that's been reported recently.

for sure. I work in a restaurant and constantly see people pulling out their tablets or Ipads to take pictures. I just want to tell them how rediculous they look.

Definitely not a big deal to me, as everyone else has said in here it seems silly to use a tablet to take pics anyway.

Yeah, I was on a recent cruise and this one couple went on shore with their iPad holding it up and taking pictures. Great way to scream tourist, rob me.

This month at Busch gardens there was a lady walking doing a facetime chat. Moments before a downpour.

I wonder why they couldn't have a rotating camera so it could be switched between front facing and rear facing. Although that would be a movable part and would probably also increase the cost.

Yeah, I don't need to snap pics with ye olde tablet. I have a feeling a number of insurance replacements are due to dropping during such situations.

That actually makes a lot of sense to me. I can definitely see it being awkward trying to hold onto while taking a pic and just dropping it.
