Earlier today Asus announced a series of three new budget-minded Android smartphones. They are their new ZenFone line, and they couldn't have made their names simpler. We have the ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6. Each devices name corresponds to the size of its display, and each device has middling specs at best, but their affordable off-contract prices reflect that. Here's a breakdown and a pic for each.

Asus Zenfone 4 - $99 off contract
  • 4-inch TN TFT display with an 800 x 480 resolution
  • Dual-core 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2520
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 5MP shooter
  • Dual-SIM support
  • 3G with HSPA+
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi direct, Bluetooth 4.0
  • A microUSB
  • 4GB storage
  • A microSD
  • Removable 1170 mAh battery

  • Dual-SIM, 3G with HSPA+
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi direct, Bluetooth 4.0

Asus Zenfone 6 = $199
6-inch Display
  • Same specs as the 5-inch model
  • Available in both 1GB and 2GB RAM variants
  • Storage options of 8 or 16GB
  • 13MP camera with f/2.0
  • 3240 mAh battery
While none of these are terribly exciting, for several markets across the globe this is proof positive of the rumors we heard last year that we would start to see very affordable handsets become more prominent in the mobile landscape.

I certainly understand the concept of a "basic" phone, and the Zenphone 4 at $99 is an exciting possibility. But a 1170mAh battery?! That I don't quite understand.
