Apple Snatches Up Blockbuster Patent

Not the death of Android, perhaps the death of multi-touch if RAND doesn't apply.

Personally, I think the only multi-touch action I ever use is pinch-to-zoom (and a double-tap can work just as well). I'll survive.

But doesn't Google have the inside track on voice actions? I see a quid-pro-quo on the horizon.

Not only Voice Actions… youtube, maps, and just about all Google software runs on IOS. Apple would never make anything that runs on Android. Imagine the iPhone without maps and youtube… The thing is Google chooses to adhere to their "Never be evil policy". They rarely, if ever, go on the offensive so I doubt you will see a quid pro quo. But boy I wish they would. Just once.

well except when Google blatantly invades your privacy on a daily basis but yeah other than that "never be evil."

But this has been a long time coming for Apple, didn't they file for this years ago? It's bad for everyone though if they are awarded this patent and chose to litigate like a mofo. I think we will all be thanking apple one day cause they are one of the companies, along with many others, who I believe are going to force massive changes to the patent system.

IF Apple chooses to uphold it I'm pretty sure quite a few companies would jump on their case. I've seen everything from mp3 players to 82 inch monitors use multi-touch touchscreens. It would be a crushing blow to the industry. Although it wouldn't surprise me if they tried.

I cannot even fathom the unholy alliance of lawyers that will be sent against this from all the different companies. Just.... the term "climactic clash" doesn't even begin to do this pending ****storm justice.

Even the sleeping giant that is Google may be disturbed enough to take action. It's not evil if it's legitimate self-defense.

and people wonder why I can't stand apple and it's BS. as everyone else has said I'm pretty sure this won't be upheld, but man is it a scary thought

Dont think Apple hasnt done their homework. They've been thinking about this for a minute, and Im willing to bet you, the've covered all their bases, and I for one, wouldnt be the least surprised,if they got this patent.

People say that Google sticks to it's "never be evil" motto, and thus far they have.
I think they're just sitting still, taking all this crap from Apple, and then without batting an eye, Google will strike Apple's death blow. Quick, clean, and not evil.

Cool,I like the way you think.

Every day that goes by, my hatred of Apple grows...mostly because of crap like this. Yeah yeah, all the Apple fanboys and anybody that wants to reason is gonna say "Oh, but they're just protecting themselves" and "Apple's done their homework" and all that nonsense...but it still just sickens me to such a high degree. I already avoid any Apple product...the only thing I've ever used from them is QuickTime, and I think I'll just ever avoid using that again as well.

This is serious for me. It may sound ridiculous to most, but I can't wait to see the downfall of Apple. I don't care if their net worth is half a trillion dollars right now. They've had their day in the sun, now it's time for the shades to be drawn on them. I'm usually pretty level-headed about things like this but this has gone on long enough. I don't recall Microsoft being as asshole-ish back when they were trying to force every computer manufacturer to use their stuff. Why hasn't the government gone after Apple for trying to monopolize? Are they like the IRS or CIA?

Say what you want, but this patent is legit and they have every right to protect their intellectual property.

Like I said, aside from pinch-to-zoom multi-touch ain't all that. But I'd have to imagine Apple will be forced to license for a reasonable fee.

a right to protect their intellectual property? What about the fact that Steve freely admitted that he wouldn't be what he was if he hadn't stolen ideas. They're a bunch of effing hypocrates. They rip off ideas and then get upset when someone improves something of theirs.

The patent system is an outdated dinosaur, sadly it probably won't change any time soon

They just passed patent reform a few months ago. Unfortunately it got worse, but they wanted it to be uniform across the world. Now you can patent things that don't exist. Like Verizon patenting holograms

Makes it look like Apple is grasping at straws. Steve Jobs is dead and so will Apple, may take a while but they will fizzle out.
