How do I manually go in and see which apps need to be updated on my s3?

Open the Play Store app, tap the menu button (that's the capacitive button to the left of your home button), select My Apps. Any apps that have updates available will be listed at the top.

As long as your S3 is connected to the internet (either by mobile data or WiFi), you can also update your apps through a web browser. Just log into your account at play.google.com and click on "My Android Apps." It will give you a list of all of your Android devices, along with all of the apps you have installed on each. If there's an update available for any of them, it will have an "Update" button under the app name. If you click that button, it will update the app.
