AntiVirus for Android?

My wife just discovered the AVG app for Android. Is an AntiVirus app necessary on Android? If I get it for my phone would it slow it down? Please advise.

Antivirus is unnecessary and would slow down your device tremendously - you can definitely pass on that application

Are you forgetting the worm that transferred on tons of phone through bluetooth not too long ago? I'd say definitely necessary...

You don't need antivirus, there are currently only one or two known viruses for android, and they are more proof of concepts than anything else. It will just slow down your phone and eat your battery without providing any benefit.
