Welcome to the Forum. Love the user name. . I didn't have any issues with Pie and the SD card in my Z2 Force. I have had SD cards just go bad though, for no apparent reason. How was your card formatted, as external or adoptive internal storage? Having SD cards setup as adoptive internal storage is well known to cause lots of issues, and usually irreversible.

How is that selected during the format process? How can I check the status? Is this an issue just with this phone?

It's an issue with any Android phone using a SD Card. When you first insert the card for the first time, a message appears asking which option you want to use (Internal or External). I don't remember how to check, haven't used an SD card in over a year. But I think the Storage Settings might display how the card is setup?
