Android 2.2 - Froyo

2.01 was a small update for bug fixes. 2.1 actually added features and was much more involved, so it seems much more reasonable to compare the 2.2 update to 2.1 instead of 2.01.

Yeah, right. You'll be around here watching just like everyone else.

Only in the sense of checking the Droid forums in general.
2.1 made my Droid faster, and that's what I wanted.

I don't care about Flash and I don't know what else 2.2 offers, so I won't
sweat it. It'll be nice when it comes, but I won't believe any dates whatsoever.

... lets just hope that people remain patient and not freak out.

But but but... I wanna freak out!!!

Man, you are a buzzkill. :D
WAIT! now I'm interested....

Let me watch you freak out. Hold on I'm going to sit down so I can watch.

Ok go ahead........

Here's what 2.0.1 brought:

xx OS stability is improved.
xx Battery life is improved.
xx Camera auto focus functionality is improved, and time between
shots is reduced.
xx Enhancements for three-way calling.
xx Audio for incoming calls is improved.
xx When receiving a call on call waiting, the speakerphone now
remains on.
xx Bluetooth® functionality is improved; background echo is eliminated.
xx Improved Bluetooth phone book transfer of contacts to in-vehicle
Bluetooth solutions.
xx After closing a GPS application, the GPS icon will now automatically
be removed from the notification panel.
xx Users can now receive SMS and MMS messages after an EMS
message is received.
xx SMS and MMS may now be sent to seven-digit addresses.
xx Google® contact merging has been updated to accommodate
seven-digit numbers.
xx Visual Voice Mail notices now arrive instantaneously.
• The corporate calendar widget user interface is updated.

That's quite a bit more then "a few bug fixes."

I'm not saying it will definitely go as smooth as 2.0.1, I am saying that it isn't fair to judge it based on 2.1.

Either way, there's no way of knowing how smoothly things will go so it's a moot point.

Yeah, right. You'll be around here watching just like everyone else.

And again I say don't think of the 2.1 rollout as being typical. We don't know that, we've had two rollouts one went smooth the other not so smooth.

One issue not mentioned in this context is that as I recall much of the debacle associated with the 2.1 update stemmed from VZW's outsourcing the OTA to a third party and breakdowns associated with the sheer volume of Droids that were updated.

It's not clear what the lesson of that is. There is an even larger volume of updates to be passed out now. From the glass half full perspective, however, it may be that both VZW and their subcontractor may be better prepared this time around.

I thought the droid shadow was coming in july and the droid 2 they don't know yet. Most tech sites are saying the shadow is not the droid 2.
Motorola Shadow was pushed back until August because of a hardware change.

It was supposed to drop in July with the Droid 2 coming shortly after. So realistically a July/August release for the Droid 2.

But now with the change of the release of the Shadow I don't know what will happen with the release schedule. May or may not change. I haven't heard anything

Any date on when the droid 2 is coming?:icon_eek:
July........

I thought the droid shadow was coming in july and the droid 2 they don't know yet. Most tech sites are saying the shadow is not the droid 2.

Edit it wont let me edit: I just looked again and the pic on the leaked droid releasing in july doesn't say shadow on it but everyone is claiming its the shadow but some sites claim that the shadow/droid 2 which ever it really is but it said shadow has motoblur and droid 2 is suppose to have the standard google experience. Umm sorry I dont know this but whats the difference between the two? And if it is the shadow and now the droid 2 why does it not say shadow it the leaked pic it only says droid on there so maybe it is the droid 2. I guess we will see

I would hope 2.2 is on this device when its released though. They say vzw is offering an early upgrade to customers who want to upgrade early for this device on a fathers day special.

what hardware change was that? I would think they wouldn't release the two right after one another. I would think you would release the shadow then at least wait 4- 6 months after to release another better phone. why get the shadow if you could get the droid 2 ya know but hey I guesss they do what they do for a reason
