Amazon to Start Selling Ad Space on Kindle Fire's Welcome Screen

It looks like Amazon is hoping to recoup some of the money they lose with every Kindle Fire sale by offering ads that will show up on the welcome screen of their popular e-readers. These ads will set you back $600,000 for two months of advertising that shows up every time the device boots. So far advertisers haven't shown much excitement towards the new program, but instead have expressed concern that the ads might cause anger among consumers. Currently it is unknown whether Amazon will bring these ads to all Kindle Fires or only to future ad-supported models. We'll let you know as more details become available.

Which is why I would never buy a Kindle Fire. Other than it being underpowered for me, I think many around here knew these kinds of ads were coming. If it was ad based and free, I'd get one, but not going to pay $200 for a device and have them start throwing ads at me. Good thing there are devs out there with Roms for it.

What do you do that you need so much power on a tablet? As for paying $200 and then having ads thrown at you, I agree, but as your last sentence points out, most people here are going to slap CM9(or one of the many CM9 variations) or AOKP on there and never have to worry about these ads. My GF has a KF which I moded and use on occasion, and they are a great little tab. I have AOKP with Hashcode's Kernel on it and it runs super smooth with or with out the .2 Ghz OC.
