Adding Pics to Friends on Gtalk

I'm kinda tired of looking at blanks on my friends' list in Gtalk. I've added pics to them manually through gchat/gmail contacts lists, and it shows up when I'm on gmail gchatting, but not on my phone. I see the pics I chose when I look at contact info, but not in the Gtalk app. Is there a way to force my phone to use either their facebook pics or my google contacts details?

apparently no one knows how to do this. google is no help either, which is odd & frustrating
