I opened it and there appear to be files from a phone.

This doesnt look like anything you could install but there are .apks from 2.3 in a directory. I suppose you could try installing them

.gz is a rom i believe. you can flash it onto your phone iirc. This is what i did back when i had the droid and manually updated to 2.2.

That's the VERY basic format for an update and the first ROMs were all tarballs. DroidMod still uses it for SPRecovery installs.

It was claimed to be the 2.3 system. Might be from the Nexus S, though im honestly not sure.
