I would like to know where the apk files are stored on the sd card for the apps that are downloaded from the market.
    Any idea?

They're not saved onto the SD card. They are saved in the phone's internal storage space.

If you'd like to save them to your SD card, you can use ASTRO to back them up, but as Skaggz pointed out, they need to be installed on your internal memory to run.

If you want to have access then I suggest rooting and installing bugless beast v.9 rom then enabling the godmode script. Check the hacks section for more info.
