We have been hearing rumors of Xiaomi's "Pinecone" SoC, but now it is finally official. The Surge S1 will be Xiaomi's very first in house processor built specifically for their phones. Most phone manufacturers order their SoCs from other manufacturers, but there are some great advantages to making your own processor. When an OEM develops their own chip they are better able to tweak it to work with their hardware and software making their phones both more efficient and powerful.

The Surge S1 features an octa-core 64-bit processor clocked at 2.2GHz. Of the 8 cores there are four 2.2GHz A53 cores for the high performance tasks and four 1.4GHz A53 cores for the lower performance processes. The chip also includes the Mali-T860 GPU. The chip brings features like dual microphone voice reduction, HD calling, 14-bit dual ISP, and an OTA updateable baseband.
