Plastic housing brittle?

Has anyone else noticed that the plastic on the Thunderbolt is brittle? I dropped it once, onto carpet in my living room, and it has a crack in the plastic now. My case should be here in a the next few days, but that is ridiculous. How does the plastic on the body of the phone crack and the screen doesn't? Glad that the Seidio Active case covers the area, but this is the first phone I have damaged in the seven years I have been with Verizon.

I have the active case and my phone fell from my pocket while sitting on a high bar chair. The phone survived no problem
