The first finalized ability to mirror Android to your TV through the Google Chromecast is now available, thanks to Koushik Dutta. There is a catch though... you have to have a rooted Nexus 5 to do it right now. Koush recently updated his mirroring beta, but it is obviously still in its early phase of development. The main reason the Nexus 5 is currently necessary is because it's supposedly the only phone which includes a hardware vp8 encoder. Here's a quote with a few more details,

So far, the Mirror app lets you create a video recording of your Android device, mirror your Android screen to an Apple TV, and mirror your Android screen to Chromecast and Chrome (Nexus 5 only). To try the Mirror beta out for yourself you’ll need a rooted Android 4.4.2 phone, you can follow the rest of Koush’s instructions in the source link below.

At some point in the future root won’t be necessary, and Mirror will be wrapped up for a proper Play Store release, but we’re not sure exactly when that will be yet.

For all of our Nexus 5 users with Chromecasts who decide to try this out... let us know how it goes!
