Lower the screen brightness
shorten the screen timeout
keep wifi and gps off

I know there are some apps that supposedly help, but I do not use any.
Do a search on battery life and read up on what others have also found.

You could sign up for Google Voice and create your own number, and change it whenever you want. Free SMS that won't even go against your text messaging plan
