I just rooted my droid x how can I improve my battery life?

get rid of bloatware, get a hold of a rom/theme.
I run Tranquility and love the speed and battery life.
I run with gps/bluetooth/wifi/etc turned off, unless I need them.

Always make a nandroid backup before doing anything.

And I wouldn't uninstall the apps I would freeze them through Titanium Backup paid version.

Amazon MP3, Amazon Kindle, Blockbuster and weather/news widgets just to name a few.

The above are considered bloatware. Anything preinstalled on your phone that you cannot uninstall without being rooted.

You can make your phone quicker than stock without a ROM and without Overclocking, JMO.

Freezing bloatware and changing my Home Launcher did it for me.
