HDMI out DROID X. Is it possible to uncripple?

Is there any way to uncripple the HDMI out on the droid X, allowing for full OS output? If so, where would we start? Is this something built into the phone, moto's shell over android or is it just 2.1?

I'm happy that I can output the movies I download through it, although the interface to control fastforward and reverse is lacking. Shot some HD vids of my kids last night and they look amazing on our big plasma :icon_eek:

Once it is rooted (which i think recently happend) the developer community will hit it hard...just takes time. Would be easier to be able to load custom roms (the EVO crowd is very close to universal hdmi out ala galaxy s).
