Ok, maybe this is not an Android failure but I have had problems with my HTC wildfire S updating Google mail and calender.
Went through lots of forums and tried all kind of suggestions.
Ended up uninstalling all gmail-app updates and now its working again.
Just in case you'er having the same problem.
