was reading an article about the accidental discovery of an enzyme that eats plastic. Why does the movie "Andromeda Strain" come to mind?

they stumbled upon it by accident. Researchers studying a newly-discovered bacterium found that with a few tweaks, the bug can be turned into a mutant enzyme that starts eating plastic in a matter of days, compared to the centuries it takes for plastic to break down in the ocean.

Saw that. First thing I thought of was that giant plastic ocean floating around in the ocean.

Well, if it comes to California it will cause cancer and have to be labeled as such. Soon California is going to require bottles to have caps that are permanently tethered to the bottle. Any clothing that is more than 50% synthetic will have to have a warning label that states that it sheds plastic. Plastic straws will be outlawed by the end of the year, too. Here it is cheaper to litter than toss a recyclable in the trash. Littering is only a 500 or 1,000 fine versus the 10K for tossing that aluminum can in a standard garbage can.
