y r satellite phones so rare yet so useful everywhere

Why doesn't technology today allow for the use of satellites to communicate as commonly as cell phones and their associated terrestrial towers?

The coverage is everywhere. I do note the phones are bulkier which is not convenient, but they work everywhere.

It's just so prohibitive in dollars and cents for starters but also other factors must exist?

Why not more useful, practical etc?

They don't work very well inside which is a bit of a problem for people.
Airtime is also VERY expensive, there's about a 1 second delay, data is very slow, phones are around $1500.
