I thought roaming refers to when you travel aboard, that's when roaming costs a lot. I'm from the UK so not sure how it works in the US. Best bet would be to confirm with your network operator and the tariff/plan you have.

Don't want any nasty surprises each month as most network operators charge a lot for data.

On the Droid X, when you go to System Select, the choice is either Home Only or Automatic, that's all. So perhaps, it's doing what it needs to, and making roaming available when there is a weak signal. Anyone know?

It's back one screen, under Settings, Wireless & Networks, Mobile Network.
