Does anyone have any insight to this topic? This is something sorely missing from the current android OS.

My Company does not support activesync for email access. If I was able to open a layer 3 tunnel through my corporate VPN gateway I would be able to access my mail with an "oulook"-like client such as touchdown. This is how my peers are accessing their mail with their iPhones. Basically this method is the same as accessing our corporate email with a laptop. It is certainly not ideal, but would be a lot more useful than outlook web access which I'm stuck with now.
