Why no arrows on the virtual keyboard?

Why doesn't the keyboard at least have left & right arrows? I really don't like having to try and use the red select circle thingy. Activating it is a hassle. Sometimes it works, other times you get the keyboard popping up. And along those lines, how do you close the eff'ing keyboard when it opens and don't want it?

the back soft key should "drop" the keyboard

Press and hold the menu button opens and closes the keyboard.

Long drag down across the keyboard makes it go away.

If you're using the Swype keyboard, swipe from the bottom left key (the one w/the big blue "S" on it) to the "SYM" key...that will bring up a very cool keyboard w/arrow keys and all kinds of neat cursor control/editing options.
