What is the best configuration for the mobile wifi hotspot (stock app)?

Foxfi works awesome for me. Especially since they fixed the issue with jelly bean.

I had read somewhere that when Foxfi is installed you have to enter a password just to wake your screen up, even if Foxfi isn't running. Is this still true?

Yes...to unlock your screen you need to set up a swipe or number unlock. This is relevant for jelly bean users.

Ice cream sandwich you didn't have to do that. But it still works nice.

I understand the swip part, I have to do that now. I thought it was part of the normal ops for these phones. I'm refering to ALSO having to enter a number unlock, is that also mandetory?

No.. its not necessary to do the numbers but the pattern type unlock is..
