What is broken when a touch screen fails?

I ask becuase I have a droid1 and droid2 which both have bad touch screens (I have tried multiple roms)...the droid1 started with basicly one "row" on the screen not responding to touch anymore and it soon developed the crazy screen problem where it's like someone hitting buttons on the screen all over. The droid2 just has the crazy screen problem.

I really want to know what is "broken" in the touch screen that causes these issues? There are no moving parts to fail so I can't figure what could make a touchscreen just start going haywire short of an actual crack in it of course.

Thanks for any info on this.

If im not mistaken this is a result of one of two things:
1) the touch panel itself is failing due to general degredation in the panel (i havent heard of this in a long time)
2) soldering/wiring/circuitry between the panel and the mainboard are degraded and are shorting out/not making a connection.

hope this helps!
