I think everyone is content with 2.2 since it is still relatively new to most phones. They haven't hit the need or a real want for an update yet. Once more is known about Gingerbread, it is released in some way...etc there will be more on it.
I have had 2.2 since launch of the droid 2 and i feel that there needs to be another ota update. The release of the update in aug was just a patchwork update. It didn't really make that much of a difference on my device.
I have heard a few things about femdroid. It gets a headache then just stops working.
It also does a lot of things for you when you first get it. But after a while it realizes it doesn't have to do those things anymore. Which leads into g/f droid. OK I'm done.
2.2.1 was just pushed to open source a few weeks ago. Open source is usually behind what they are working on by probably around 6 months or so. I'd suspect Gingerbread will be late '10 or early '11.
