This is what I'm doing now. Love the contrast and looks good on the black physical hardware. Unfortunately the texture in the background is not showing in the screenshot it's a nice stoneish texture. The box is also a black box over the picture for my wife and the location.

The clock is bobclock the other is called calendr. They are both free in the market.

Calendr always shows the next event entry from your calendar.
