Weak WiFi makes my phone useless

RAZR M, couple month old. I'm not in love, I must admit...

...So I spent a few hours at my daughter's new house, waiting for furniture delivery. I didn't know their password for their WiFi, so my phone connected to a nearby restaurant's WiFi but the signal was weak. The phone was practically useless when I tried checking my emails, it lost connection to Google. It also wouldn't take my dictation when exchanging text messages, it simply ignored me speaking to it very clear and slow, again, I guess because of loosing Google.

I don't understand why this so-called smart phone couldn't switch to the 4G that was available (or maybe it was 3G, if it matter at all)... Was I supposed to just disconnect the WiFi altogether?

Thanks.

If you are contatntly loosing weak Wi-FI signal try this.
Go to System settings/Wi-Fi/Wi-Fi setting [lower left corner]/Advanced/ and uncheck "Avoid poor connections"

...It has been on "Avoid poor connections" all the time.... Maybe I should also change the Frequency band? It's now on Auto, there is also "5 GHz only" and 2.4 available as options.
