Verizon: Can't use data & voice at the same time, any IM client that uses text?

I need something that uses text messages instead of data for IM so when I'm on the phone I can see a message that comes through. Anyone know of anything that will work for me?

I'm having a hard time understanding your situation.

If you want to see a message come through i recommend you try Trillian. It shows the most recent IMs in the taskbar on top.

AOL Instant Messenger allows you to link your mobile number to your screen name and have IMs you receive texted to you.

2. IM apps tend to use data to transfer messages.

What IM apps use SMS for message delivery so he can call and IM at the same time?
